For many Canadians, accessing dental care has often depended on cost, insurance coverage, or personal financial limitations. With the introduction of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), more families and individuals finally have access to essential oral health services without the stress of overwhelming bills.

At Cataraqui Family Dental, we’ve been guiding patients through the program since its rollout, helping them understand what’s covered, what isn’t, and how to plan for appointments under CDCP.

Below, we break down the most common questions Canadians are asking right now, based on the official Canada.ca CDCP guidelines, so you can feel confident about your next visit.

How Much Will I Need to Pay Under CDCP?

Your out-of-pocket cost under the CDCP depends entirely on your adjusted family net income. The CDCP never pays 100% of every bill; instead, it reimburses a portion of fees up to a set limit. Here’s how the income-based co-payment works:

Income under $70,000

·        CDCP covers 100% of eligible services at CDCP fee rates

·        You pay 0%, but you may still face extra charges if your provider’s fees exceed CDCP limits

Income $70,000–$79,999

·        CDCP covers 60%

·        You cover 40%, plus any additional fees if service costs exceed CDCP rates

Income $80,000–$89,999

·        CDCP covers 40%

·        You cover 60%, plus any additional fees above CDCP reimbursement

It’s important to note that CDCP fees are not the same as standard dental fees in Ontario. Before any appointment, we always walk patients through potential costs so there are no surprises. You never pay upfront for covered services; CDCP pays the dental office directly, so your responsibility is only the remaining co-payment and any non-covered fees.

Are Emergency Dental Treatments Covered by CDCP?

Yes, emergency dental exams and urgent care are covered under the CDCP. This includes:

·        Emergency exams

·        X-rays

·        Temporary fillings

·        Pain control procedures

·        Treatment for infections

·        Certain extractions

·        Root canal procedures (when medically needed)

Emergency services fall under the Diagnostic, Basic, Endodontic, Periodontal, and Oral Surgery categories outlined in the federal plan.

However, some emergency treatments, such as complex surgeries, advanced sedation, or procedures beyond frequency limits, ma require pre authorization. This means the dentist must submit a request for approval from CDCP before the service is provided. At Cataraqui Family Dental, we handle this process for you, ensuring your emergency care aligns with what the plan covers.

Does CDCP Coverage Vary by Age or Income?

Yes, income is the biggest factor, determining how much of your dental bill is reimbursed. But age can also affect what services you receive and how often:

Younger patients

Often qualify for cleanings, exams, and cavity treatments more frequently.

Adults and seniors

Access a wide range of services, including periodontal care, root canals, extractions, and dentures.

Orthodontics (Braces)

Not currently covered. Only covered in cases of strict medical necessity and subject to spending limits.

CDCP is not a universal free dental program. It’s anincome-tested plan designed to make essential dental care more affordable for Canadians across age groups.

Does CDCP Cover Dental Specialists?

Yes, the CDCP does cover specialist services, as long as the treatment falls within the categories approved under the plan. This includes:

·        Endodontists (root canals)

·        Periodontists (gum disease treatment)

·        Oral surgeons (extractions, surgical procedures)

·        Prosthodontists (dentures, partials)

However:

·        Specialist fees may exceed CDCP reimbursementrates

·        Some specialist procedures require pre authorization

·        You may have additional out-of-pocket costs depending on the complexity

Our team helps patients understand referrals, estimates, and pre authorization steps so they can make informed decisions before booking specialist care.
